El Ranchito Cafe?

 

Monument, KS.  I can;t believe this is the Cafe.  The sign looks too we maintained,  Maybe it points to someplace else in town. Checking google earth, I saw the same building in a photo dated 2009.  The building looked the same but the sign had different wording.  May 12, 2014

Folsom Hotel - Sepia

Abandoned Folsom Hotel in Folsom, New Mexico.  Folsom, in the NE corner of New Mexico, is best know for Folsom Man (Site) discovered in the area.  While there are residents on Folsom, NM, is has been classified as a ghost town.   May 13, 2014

Shooting the Blood Moon

Early this morning we in the USA were treated by a celestial show - full lunar eclipse.  Moon rise of the April 14th was mostly clear with a few light clouds. While I had napped during the day, not sure if I would be up for the whole eclipse. Gathered the equipment for a shoot.

All photos processed from RAW by Adobe Camera RAW. The camera was supported by Sunpak tripod.  Canon wired electronic shutter release.

Early evening shot. The first thing I did was set a negative EV, trying to adjust the metering for the bright subject.

At my location, approximately 20 miles due East of downtown Omaha, NE, the eclipse started about 1:00 am CDT. Clear and cold (upper 20s) with no wind.  Camera was set up in my driveway. This photo was taken at 1:16 am.

Changed my len before subsequent shots.  Wanted to get a close as my equipment would allow.  Caught this photo as the eclipse nears totality and the moon starts turning red.  1:57am

The "money" shot of the shoot.  You can understand why its called a "Blood Moon".  This shot required changes to my procedure.  I switched to "live" mode to get a good focus.  Fortunately, I had time to go into the house to process earlier photos and realized I had a focus problem.

On the way back to the full moon, I was having problems with artifacts - see above. There was no detail in the moon like I was hoping to see.  It was now 4:00 am.

Some more experimenting, I was able to get some detail into the moon before the eclipse was finished.   4:25 am

While it was a long time in the cold (between breaks inside the garage and house) it was a productive shoot.  I learned a lot about my Canon 60D camera and "shooting the moon".  These photos will not be available for sale.  At a later date, I will post information of any that may be for sale.

Swanson Shootout

The 2014 Psycowpath racing season is underway!  The first race of the season was held yesterday at Swanson Park, Bellevue, Nebraska.

With below freezing temperatures, there was some 30 trail runners for their race.  Runners had a start time of 8am and ran 5+ miles over the Swanson Park trails..  I did not arrive until 9 (Was at ham radio breakfast before). Was there in time to shoot photos of the trail running podium.

Large field of bicycle races.  I heard there were about 40 racing the 4 hour marathon.  Once the Juniors, Marathon, and Category 3 races were off, i headed into the woods for shots on the trail.  Found a vantage point not too far from the shelter.

Temperature were still under freezing.  Missed some of the riders when my fingers would stop working trying to actuate the shutter button.

Visited for a while between races.  Shot the start of the Category 1 and Category 2 races.  Ended up with the photos of the early bicycle race podiums.  By then, I had enough for the day.  Stopped by the bike shop and grocery store on the way home.

Thanks for the race promoters, the volunteers, and officials.  Great job by the THOR (TrailsHaveOurRespect.org) trail maintenance crew.  Special thanks to Edge Physical Therapy for grilling and providing burgers and hot dogs.

Shooting at the Zoo

It had been nearly 10 years since I visited the Zoo here in Omaha.  Bought a Zoo membership this Winter, figuring to get out when weather is not good for bike riding.  It would also give me a chance to hone my photography skills.

I did not want to overload myself with gear, so only brought my Canon EOS 60D with Tamron 18-200mm lens, a spare battery and cleared SD card.  In my 2 1/2 hour walk in sections of the zoo, I got a good feeling for the versatility of the camera/lens combo.

A real challenge was shooting in the Aquarium.  Issues with low light, moving subjects, and shooting through glass were on my mind.  I did have some problems, but was still able to get some good shots.

I had started in the Desert Dome but did not take many photos there as much of the dome is under reconstruction.  However, I was able to use the telephoto section of the lens in that dome for the shot below.

All-in-all, it was a successful day scoping out the zoo and verifying equipment needed.  My only disappointment was the Lied Jungle. Since it was a cool day outside and with the humidity in the jungle, I gave up.  It just took too long to get the camera and lens temperature stabilized.  Will have to wait until warmer weather.  Also looking forward shooting some of the flora when they come into bloom.
